Smith stated he was in a stupor when he returned to his seat following the on-stage brawl, which overshadowed his maiden Oscar victory, in a statement to "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" about it.

He claimed that a candid discussion with his 9-year-old nephew led to a flash of insight.

The "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" actor claimed he lost control that evening as the result of "a wrath that had been stored up for a really long time" eventually erupting, but he added that he recognises the harm his actions did.

Smith left the Academy after receiving a lot of criticism, and the organisation later barred him from all functions for the following ten years. He has repeatedly expressed his regret to Rock, the Academy, his family, and his fans.
