Gimbel Brothers Department Store started the procession for the children and inhabitants of Philadelphia.

After Gimbel's closed in 1986, WPVI-TV/6abc took over to maintain the Christmas tradition of Santa Claus' formal arrival in the "City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection."

Since then, 6abc has been producing the parade with the help of corporate sponsors, and it now attracts a large number of celebrities, floats, balloons, performance groups, and marching bands.

The parade route begins at the intersection of 20th Street and JFK Boulevard, then goes left onto 16th Street, then left again onto Ben Franklin Parkway.
