The successful missile test revealed that the nation could now reach any mainland target in the United States after achieving a sustained flight.

At least 88 ballistic missiles have been fired by North Korea this year, along with one other ICBM with a 9300-mile range, albeit that test was unsuccessful.

In 2017, North Korea tested its Hwasong-14 and Hwasong-15 missiles, demonstrating that it had gained the capability to reach the United States.

However, such tests did not show that North Korea had advanced technologically enough to circumvent American air defence systems.

A putative Hwasong-17 missile was launched by North Korea on November 3rd, but it failed to follow its intended path and, after stage separation, crashed into the ocean.
