Russian Duma grants LGBTQ ‘propaganda’ measure final approval

On Thursday, Russian lawmakers gave their final approval to a bill that significantly expands restrictions on activities seen as promoting gay rights in the country.

This is another step in a crackdown that has been going on for years in Russia against the country’s LGBTQ community, which is already under severe pressure.

A prohibition on what the authorities refer to as “promotion of non-traditional sexual relations” has been in place since legislation known as the “gay propaganda law.

The new draught seeks to extend this prohibition to minors. It was approved by the Kremlin in 2013 as part of an initiative to advance “traditional values” across the Russian Federation.

This year, legislative action was taken to prohibit the dissemination of such information to those aged 18 and older.

On Thursday, the State Duma, which is the lower house of parliament, completed its third and final reading of the measure and gave it their approval.

After that, it will be sent to the upper house, which is called the Federation Council, and then it will be delivered to President Vladimir Putin

By enacting revisions to the country’s Constitution in 2020 that, among other things, declared that the “institution of marriage is a union between a man and a woman,”
